But I have no time for... (Part 3 of 3)

On to the final portion of our three-part series, “But I have no time for…” This week’s focus is stretching. Even when we are on our best behavior with nutrition and exercise, it seems stretching is either left out of the program or not given enough time. Why? When there are so many benefits of stretching!

Stretching increases flexibility, improves range of motion, and improves circulation. Not to mention it can also relieve stress, improve posture, and prevent injury. In my opinion, preventing injury is the biggest reason you’ll want to make stretching part of your routine. Two years ago, I pulled my right hamstring. Not only was it painful, but it took months of rehabilitation to get it back to normal. My chiropractor, Dr. Carmen Romano of Madison Medical and Sports Rehab (http://www.mysportsrehab.com ), was a great help in healing my hamstring. And, on a side note, I am proud to tell you that Dr. Romano will be contributing to this blog in future posts so that he can be as much of a help to you as he was for me.

It is important not only to take the time to stretch each major muscle group, but to also do it correctly. Improper stretching can cause more harm than no stretching at all. For example, bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle. The proper stretching technique is to stretch to the point of tension, not pain, and hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds (60 seconds on tighter areas).

I’ve been asked many times if it’s better to stretch before or after working out. While it is better to stretch AFTER (because your muscles are warm and more receptive to stretching), I highly suggest a brief warm-up followed by stretching the major muscle groups. Dr. Romano says, “Always warm up before stretching a cold muscle. You can do a light jog or jump rope.” I’ve found, especially in cooler weather, there is much less tension in my body when I do this before working out as opposed to jumping into the workout without a warm-up. Another benefit is that I am also more mentally ready to begin my routine.

To get back to last week's topic --what's keeping you from exercise --for a minute, I'd like to say a few things.

First, the thing that keeps me away most is motivation! I have the time, I have the energy, but I don't have the motivation to get up and do it. I think sometimes the biggest reason is because I get bored by myself. Trainers are great, but when you have to go it alone it can be difficult and it can get boring. I wish sometimes that there were places where you could meet work out buddies or something of the sort (especially when your friends or family aren't interested or are to far away).

Secondly, the cold weather is a downer, especially when you want to go walking or running or whatever outdoors. If we could only keep it 80 degrees and sunny every day!!!

Thirdly, with the cold weather comes the need to move indoors. If I can't make it to a gym, I'm stuck working out in my apartment, which means there is really no space to move around. If anyone has any good tips, or video/dvd's that work well for small spaces that would be great shared adivce.

Lastly, and it may sound a bit silly, but one thing that will keep me from exercising at the gym is the notion that people are watching me. I know, it sounds silly, but I get self concious and there have been moments when this has shorted my work outs!!!! Especially when it comes to weights and I'm surrounded by a bunch of iron pumping men! Does anybody else get this way? LOL!!!!

As for this weeks topic, I always wondered about the before vs. after bit - but your advice helps a lot. Especially the warming up for a few minutes first.

Wouldn't you think that those who are reluctant to exercise would love stretching because it's the least strenuous part of the workout? Well that's how it is for me... I love stretching, especially when I'm watching TV - in the past I always felt awful when watching TV, like I should be doing something else more productive. Now, if I start to feel antsy, Ill just start stretching. Much better than a trip to the kitchen, eh? ;)
